Program at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland

The Academy is planning a program and reception for Monday, November 8 in Cleveland, Ohio to celebrate the work of local Fulbrighters and local hosts of visiting scholars.

Special guests include Mr. Fahrettin Ergin - a Fulbrighter from Turkey who is earning his PhD in mechanical & aerospace engineering at Case Western, and Professor Fischer of the Psychology Department at Hiram College who will be bringing a guest - Kudzai Shava, the Director of the Disability Resource Center at Midlands State University in Gweru, Zimbabwe. Other participants will be coming from Kent State, Cleveland State and the University of Akron.

The program will start at 5:00 pm in Sears Tower of the Medical School, Room T-501, at Case Western Reserve University (which hosted the Vice Presidential Debate a few weeks ago). Cleveland and Northeast Ohio is an important center for scholarship, and it is also home to a number of innovative science & technology-based corporations.

Our contact at CWRU is Dr. Nahida Gordon of the Department of Bioethics at the School of Medicine. Dr. Gordon is a current recipient of a Fulbright Alumni Initiatives Award, to facilitate her work with faculty at Birzeit University in Palestine. If you wish to attend our Cleveland program, please email or call Eric Howard at the Academy's office: 866-327-4448 for directions.

Follow-up from the International Fulbright Conference

Fulbrighters from some 30 countries gathered earlier this month in for Athens for a series of seminars and lectures and to build ties among Fulbrighters worldwide. The previous international conference had been held in Hungary in 1996.

There were three important outcomes for the Academy. First, we strenghtened ties with national alumni groups and commissions. For example, groups in the UK, Ireland, Morocco, and the Middle East have promoted the Academy to their members through announcements in their bulletins.

Second, the Academy was asked to play a leading role in the Fulbright Centennial Celebrations. Senator Fulbright was born on April 9, 1905, and we will be working with Harriet Mayor Fulbright (his widow), alumni groups, Fulbright commissions, and others on organizing an array of events throughout the coming year. The Centennial webpage - www.Fulbright100.org - will be up and running shortly.

Lastly, the Academy was asked to serve on the organizing committee for the next international Fulbright conference, with the goal of bringing more individuals from the sciences and the business community to Beijing around the time of the 2008 Olympics. The Fulbright Association (US) and the Hellenic Association of Fulbright Scholars did an excellent job with the 2004 conference, and we look forward to building on their success.

Other News from Members & Affiliated Organizations

The Fulbright Commission in Chile is pleased to announce that the new US Ambassador to Chile, Craig A. Kelly is a Fulbrighter. He was confirmed as Ambassador by the U.S. Senate in May 2004, and presented his credentials to Chilean President Ricardo Lagos at the La Moneda Palace on September 9, 2004. As Fulbrighter 1982, in Bologna, Italy, Ambassador Kelly did research on the underground resistance in Italy. Also in September, President Lagos named Ignacio Walker Prieto to be Minister of Foreign Affairs. In the early 1980's, Minister Prieto completed his doctoral degree in Political Science as a Fulbright grantee at Princeton University.

The Moroccan American Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange is pleased to announce the formation of the Moroccan Fulbright Alumni Association. Their inaugural meeting in September brought together some 100 participants for a program on environment and sustainable development. Several young engineers who are on the alumni group's board attended the conference in Athens.

The Fulbright Commission in Portugal is pleased to announce the formation of Fulbrighters Portugal, the alumni association of the Fulbright Program in Portugal. Among the members of the Board are Dr. Helena Granja, a coastal gologist in the Department of Sciences, University of Minho and Rafaela Arriaga De Oliveira, who studied Transportation Engineering as a student Fulbrighter to MIT in 1999.

Earlier this month, the Academy met with Mr. Dale Medearis, a Fulbright & Humboldt Scholar at the US EPA Office of International Activities, to discuss an initiative that will help US businesses and agencies recognize that the US is not always a leader. There are times when we can adapt and adopt environmental best practices that have been developed in other countries - in areas such regional planning, green building design, and non-point source pollution.

Selected New Members

To promote growth in the Academy, we will be giving a special gift to a randomly chosen new member each month for the rest of the year. We have some very nice pens make of white birch and some "first-day- of-issue" envelopes of the US Postal Service stamp commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Fulbright Program. For September the gift goes to Dr. Jan Hendrickx, professor of hydrology at the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology in Socorro, NM.

The University of Wisconsin-La Cosse has joined the Academy as an institutional member. With 8,746 students, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is one of 13 comprehensive universities in the UW System. The University has Colleges of Business Administration; Liberal Studies; Education, Exercise Science, Health and Recreation (EESHR); Science and Allied Health; and a School of Arts and Communication. The UW-L Office of International Education is directed by Dr. Jay Lokken, who manages programs for incoming and outgoing students and faculty.

Dr. Robert Wei is Assoc. Professor of Chemistry at Cleveland State University, and his research focus is environmental pathology and free radicals. In 2000, he was a Fulbright lecturer/researcher on environmental chemistry at the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka. He is one of 50 CSU faculty and staff who will be recognized by Dr. Michael Schwartz, the President of CSU, at a special dinner in November for bringing "honor and presitige to the University as Fulbright scholars."

Dr. Stephen M. Smith is head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology at Pennsylvania State University. He divides his research between the study of rural economic change in the US. and agricultural development in third world countries, working in Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, Spain and Venezuela. He was among the first researchers to examine the role of service industries in the rural US. Current research includes rural development policy, economic transitions of rural communities, rural employment, agrarian reform, and markets for traditional crops. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer and in 1998-99, he was a Senior Fulbright Scholar at the Institute for Peruvian Studies in Lima, Peru.
