Fulbright Forum - Newsletter of the Fulbright Academy - January 2009

In 2008, FAST and its members carried out over 40 programs in all corners of the world. These activities were made possible by over $300,000 in donations, registrations, sponsorship and support. (To receive a copy of our annual report, simply reply to this message.)

For 2009, we have about 20 programs already on the agenda, and our individual and institutional members keep coming up with wonderful ideas on how we can work together to support our respective missions. For example, Paul Berkman is organizing a December conference at the Smithsonian, to commemorate the 1959 signing of the Treaty to protect and manage Antarctica for the common benefit of mankind. This week, we agreed to collaborate on the Antarctic Treaty Summit and invite FAST's growing network Fulbrighters working on climate-related issues.

Our Annual Conference is coming up in 10 weeks (March 24-27). The focus is innovation from "small places." Expand your horizons and learn about scientific developments and technology ideas that come from smaller countries. These places are home to great laboratories and incubators for new businesses. Some of the expected attendees are listed below, and a more complete list is available on our website.

  • Dr. Amine Bensaid, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Al Akhawayn University, Ifrance, Morocco
  • Dr. Yehuda Danon, Professor of Immunology, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel
  • Dr. Gautam Dasgupta, Professor of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, Columbia University, New York, NY
  • Dr. Zoran Gacovski, Professor, FON University, Skopje, Macedonia
  • Mr. Igor Lestar, CEO, Seavus Group, Skopje, Macedonia
  • Ms. Katie Lindgren, Fulbright scholar at Lund University, Lund, Norway
  • Dr. Eric Martin, Associate Professor of Business Administration, Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic, CT
  • Mr. Lazar Nedanoski, Macedonia Enterprise Development Foundation, Skopje, Macedonia
  • Dr. Emeric Solymossy, Professor of Management, Western Illinois University, Moline, IL

Other locations for FAST programs in 2009 are Ames, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and Washington, DC. Internationally, we are developing programs in Austria, Brazil, Canada, El Salvador, Germany and Tunisia. Some of our topics for 2009 are anti-counterfeiting, science jobs in Germany, educational exchange with North Africa, digital libraries, international engineering education, woman in science, psychology, IT in K-12 education, and minorities in science.  (YouTube video about Antarctic Summit)  Visit our website for the full list of programs and topics - www.FulbrightAcademy.org.

Because of the strength of the Fulbright alumni network, FAST is able to bring multi-national and multi-disciplinary expertise to bear on many topics, and we look forward to your involvement.

The FAST 4th Annual Conference will be in Skopje, Macedonia on March 24-27, 2009. Like previous FAST conferences, we are expecting 150 people from 20+ countries for several days of engaging discussion and experiential learning. The program also includes tours to explore topics related to the conference, such as new developments in business (Macedonia's the new technology park), education (visits to four educational institutions), and tourism (Birthplace of Mother Theresa).

Local partners are SS Cyril and Methodius University, FON University, American University College, Seavus and the Macedonian Enterprise Development Foundation (MEDF) . We are particularly grateful to the MEDF for providing funds so that 20 Fulbrighters from lower-income countries can attend for free. You may also be eligible for free accommodations at a university dorm. To apply for a free registration, send an email to the FAST office (info@FulbrightAcademy.org).  Registration material is available on the FAST website.  www.FulbrightAcademy.org  For a partial list of who's attending, click here.

Institutional Development
Three Fulbright scholars joined the Board of Directors in 2008. Members are appointed to the board and serve for a three-year term. The most recent addition is Mark Horn, a business executive in the pharmaceutical industry, most recently with Wyeth. He was a Fulbright scholar in 1985 in the Jodrell Laboratory at Kew Gardens in London, conducting research on plant biochemistry.

Our other Board members are Ms. Louise Shaxson, science policy consultant in the UK (board president); Mr. Alex Lorenz, business executive with Toolmex in Massachusetts (vice president); Mr. Torsten Kracht, a Partner at Hunton & Williams in Washington (secretary), Dr. Marianne Hattar-Pollara from the School of Nursing at Azusa Pacific University and Dr. Flynn Picardal at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University.

FAST also has an international advisory council. This council helps us build ties with institutions and individuals worldwide, and they play key roles in assuring that our programs are successful. IAC members serve two year terms, and we seeking self-nominations for the next term.

A new staff member joined FAST on January 2 as our programs manager. Alex Taylor was coordinator of student affairs at the University of Southern Maine (1994-2002) and an account executive at the Portland Radio Group (2002-2008). Her hobbies include photography, ballroom dancing and riding her nine-year Arabian horse. She can be reached at 207-799-3098 or programs@FulbrightAcademy.org.
