Fulbright Forum - Newsletter of the Fulbright Academy - March 2009

Dear [First Name will go here] [Last Name will go here]

In this issue, FAST is recognizing some of our institutional members and supporters and also seeking speakers and experts to participate in several upcoming programs.  Speakers/participants at upcoming events can be Fulbright scholars, Fulbright hosts or individuals who have particular knowledge in the subject area.

FAST Sponsors and Partners

Because FAST is not funded by the Fulbright Exchange Program or the Commissions, the organization is only able to organize high quality programs through the support of corporations, institutions and individuals whose lives were positively impacted by a Fulbright experience. Some of the institutions are listed below.

In chronological order, upcoming events are:

1. Academic Exchanges with North Africa/Muslim World - May 19-21, Denver, Colorado

2. International Chemistry Education - August 16-20, American Chemical Society, Washington, DC

3. Environmental History - August 4-8, WCEH2009, Copenhagen, Denmark

4. Psychology - American Psychological Assn - August 6-9, Toronto, Canada

5. Combating Counterfeiting - Sept.30-Oct.2, Salzburg, Austria

6. IT Policy for Education Summit - Oct. 11-14, MICDL, Northport, ME

7. Antarctica Treaty Summit - Nov.30-Dec.3, Washington, DC

Visit our website for the full list of programs and topics - www.FulbrightAcademy.org.

Because of the strength of the Fulbright alumni network, FAST is able to bring multi-national and multi-disciplinary expertise to bear on topics such as those listed above.  Fulbright alumni are leaders in all of the above programs, and we look forward to your involvement. If you are working on a meeting, conference or research project that could benefit from the involvement of Fulbright scholars, please send us a note or call FAST at 866-F-BRIGHT (207-799-3098).

Our 4th Annual Conference is being held in Macedonia in two weeks. We are expecting Fulbright alumni and guests from 15 countries at the program, which will highlight new technologies and innovations coming from smaller countries - places that may not get to the front-page of international media but have ideas that are applicable worldwide. Registration is still open. For a list of attendees and or to download the program, please visit our website. http://www.fulbrightacademy.org/page/123570/

DETAILS ABOUT THE ABOVE LISTED PROGRAMS

(with additional information available on our website: www.FulbrightAcademy.org)

1. Academic & Scientific Exchanges with North Africa/Muslim World - FAST, May 18-21, Denver, Colorado

FAST is working with US Federal Agencies, Denver-area universities and the Libyan Student Union on a three day conference to discuss progress in academic and scientific exchanges during the past five years and develop recommendations to improve the exchanges. The science discussion will focus on medical sciences, engineering, water and energy-related topics. Participants include 70 Libyan graduate students (mostly mid-career professionals), staff from international exchange offices at US universities, water & energy experts, and high-level government officials from the US and Libya. We are seeking university faculty & staff and private sector individuals to lead and participate in the discussions. http://www.fulbrightacademy.org/page/136112/ < /p>

2. International Chemistry Education - August 16-20, American Chemical Society, Washington, DC

A new FAST member is organizing a symposium at the ACS Annual Conference. "Collaborations between scientists often transcend borders and cultural differences. The fundamental nature of science allows scientists to communicate using their knowledge of their field but the institutions that support them are often hindered by financial and cultural barriers. As a result, US students are often unaware of opportunities for chemistry study in countries other than the United States . This symposium will discuss ways in which barriers to cross-cultural scientific exchange can be lowered."  We are seeking papers on international exchange programs, classroom methods, and international experiences. In particular, authors from organizations with a vested interest in chemists with a global perspective are encouraged to present. Please contact FAST for details.

3. Environmental History - August 4-8, WCEH2009, Copenhagen, Denmark

The First World Congress on Environmental History will explore topics such as environmental perceptions, historical geography, agricultural/land-use history, forest policy, disease & pollution and cross-disciplinary research. FAST is working with Fulbright alumni to host a program during the Congress. Abstracts for papers are due by April 20.  www.wceh2009.org

4. Psychology - American Psychological Association - August 6-9, Toronto, Canada

Last year, the APA conference had a special program for Fulbright scholars, and over 100 Fulbrighters participated in programs such as a reception with Mrs. Harriet Fulbright, a poster session and a discussion on the impact of Fulbrights.  Some of the outcomes of that meeting are online on the APA website, and many Fulbrighters will be attending the 2009 conference in Canada.  www.apa.org/international/fulbright.html

5. Combating Counterfeiting - Sept.30-Oct.2, FAST, Salzburg, Austria

This global conference explores science and policy efforts to combat counterfeiting in fields such as pharmaceuticals, food, digital media, consumer goods and crime prevention. The conference will explore new techniques while also providing key background information to individuals who aren't experts but "should" know more about the subject because they work in fields that are increasingly being impacted by counterfeit products. Some speakers have been identified, but we are seeking additional speakers and participants are from enforcement agencies, the private sector and the research and education community. http://www.fulbrightacademy.org/page/134591/

6. IT Policy for Education Summit - Oct. 11-14, MICDL, Northport, ME

This summit will address how the digital revolution is transforming K-12 education. It will bring together policymakers and leading experts from around the world to develop a blueprint for large-scale change. It is being held in Maine, which was the first jurisdiction in the world to guarantee that each middle-school child had a laptop computer. On March 10, the Governor announced an expansion: every student in 7th through 12th grade will receive a free Apple computer. FAST is working with the Maine International Center for Digital Learning to identify speakers and participants. Contact FAST for details.

7. Antarctica Treaty Summit - Nov.30-Dec.3, Washington, DC

This summit will assess the legacy of the 1959 Antarctic Treaty on the 50th Anniversary of its signing, exploring science-policy interaction in international governance. It will be a multi-national, multidisciplinary program held at the Smithsonian. We are seeking speakers and participants with expertise in Antarctica, polar research, and the management of international commons. http://www.atsummit50.aq/

LINKS to FAST INFORMATION

We close with some news from individual Fulbrighters:

Ana Proykova in Bulgaria reports: my project "Integrated Research Center for Computational Sciences in the Microworld" was recently funded (1st of January 2009) by the Bulgarian Science Fund. I am going to organize two schools at a PhD/postdoc level. Lecturers all over Europe will be invited. It would be great if a Fulbrighter would come for lecturing on topics such as computational techniques in pico-, nano-, micro world.

Daniel Adene in Nigeria reports: I published a book "Poultry Health and Production" in 2004, and a revised edition is now out. The first edition was well received with the over 1000 copies sold-out.

Cat Myser in San Francisco reports: I have a book coming out this Fall with Oxford University Press for which I brought together some 30 scholars from 20+ countries (including several other Fulbrighters) to explore how "bioethics" is shaping up/adapting itself to local cultures/evolving generally as it is disseminated around the globe.
