A DIRECTORY OF
FULBRIGHTERS: 2000-2010
Free
copies of the print directory are available to
individuals who donate at least $125 to the Fulbright
Academy of Science & Technology. The CD-ROM
version is available to individuals who donate at least $60.
Donate $160 or more and get both. All Fulbright
grantees, alumni, hosts and their institutions are eligible
to receive this first edition Directory of Fulbrighters from
the decade 2000-2010.
A handy tool for expanding your circle of
professional contacts, the directory was produced
in partnership with Harris Connect, the leading
US publisher of alumni directories. Listings are
grouped by field of expertise, with additional indexes
covering geography, so you can easily find the Fulbrighters
in Chemistry or the Fulbrighters living in a given
city/country.
The directory focuses on professors and other
alumni of the Scholar Program; because young professionals
frequently change jobs, the directory contains only limited
data on alumni of the student program. The print directory
has contact names of over 10,000 US alumni, and the CD-Rom
contains data on more than 23,000 US and international
alumni.
The directory is free with any donations made this
week of more than $60 for the CD-ROM or $125 for the
print edition (or $160 for both). If you commit to a
$500 institutional membership, you will receive both.

HUMAN RIGHTS
PROGRAM
Judge Sang-Hyun Song, the President of the
International Criminal Court in the Hague, has agreed to be
the closing keynote speaker at the Fulbright Academy’s
annual conference in Heidelberg. Because of recent
developments in North Africa, we are trying to organize a
special program on Friday, March 18, and those interested in
Human Rights issues can register for this one-day
event.
After Judge Song attended Seoul National University Law
School, graduating with an LL.B. in 1963 and then attended
Tulane University Law School as a Fulbright Fellow, followed
by a Diploma in Comparative Legal Studies from the
University of Cambridge and a J.S.D. from Cornell Law
School. For more than thirty years, he taught as a
professor of law at Seoul National University Law School,
beginning in 1972. He has been on the ICC since 2003
and President since 2009.
A fairly new international institution, The
International Criminal Court (ICC) is the first permanent,
treaty based, international criminal court established to
help end impunity for the perpetrators of the most serious
crimes of concern to the international community. To
date, three States – Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the
Congo and the Central African Republic – have referred
situations occurring on their territories to the Court. In
addition, the UN Security Council has referred the situation
in Darfur, Sudan. After a thorough analysis of available
information, the Prosecutor has opened and is conducting
investigations in all four situations.
As with all Fulbright Academy programs, this program is
open to the public, but pre-registration is required. Register
online for our entire conference, or just the
one/two day registration option.
DIGITAL INFORMATION:
Drivers of Innovation - Virtual Libraries and Digital
Archives
A
special program on collection and dissemination of
scientific data and scientific literature has been added to
the Academy's upcoming annual conference. The March
17-18 (Thursday-Friday) sessions will expand on the
discussions held last week at an Academy-hosted a workshop
in Washington, DC on Digital Libraries and Archives for the
Maghreb, a region in North Africa. Click
here to email the coordinator.
Our Washington
Workshop had 62 participants from 8 countries plus 18 US
states. International participants came from
organizations such as the UN, UNESCO, eifl-Electronic
Information for Libraries, Morocco’s Ministry of Higher
Education and their National Institute of Hygiene, two
research libraries in Tunisia, University of Nouakchott in
Mauritania and the Université M'Hamed Bougara Boumerdes in
Algeria. US participants came from 10 US federal agencies,
14 US universities, and several key institutions, such as
the Internet Archive. The agenda and list of participants
can be downloaded
here.
The sessions on Digital Information: Drivers of
Innovation, will review additional case studies on access,
use and preservation of digital information, especially as
it relates to developments in North Africa. Expected
participants for the Heidelberg follow-up workshop include
participants from the Bibliotheka Alexandrina in Egypt and
the West African Research Center in Senegal.
Interested participants should email the Academy
this week if they wish to participate in the follow-up
workshop. Also send an email if you are unable to attend,
but wish to be involved in related activities. We have
several slots at the workshop for grantees/alumni on limited
budgets. The Academy will provide to one free night of
shared accommodation at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (room to be
shared with a fellow Fulbrighter) to selected dues-paying
members of the Academy (you must pay for their own
travel to Heidelberg). Some alumni may be eligible for
travel support from other sources. Non-Fulbrighters must
cover their own costs for travel and accommodation and
pay $225 to cover food and other workshop
costs.

Social Science is our conference
theme in
2011, but alumni from many fields
are attracted to our multi-national, multi-sectoral,
multi-disciplinary program. The conference begins on
March 16, 2011, in the historic Alte Aula at the University
of Heidelberg, and during the subsequent days we will
explore what is imminent, possible and important in the
Social Sciences - and how that relates to innovation in
other fields, such as business, law, education and STEM
fields. You can share your experiences with other
Fulbrighters who are changing the world with their unique
knowledge and
skills.
The Annual
Conference is designed to create and develop relationships
among current and future leaders - the types of
relationships that Fulbright grants are famous for - so
please come to share your knowledge and experience. The
plenary presentations, science tours, film festival and
Saturday seminars are among the many activities.
For students who
wish to present their research, we have openings in the
poster session. We also have several openings for
panelists.
We are planning
for 150 participants (on par with our past conferences).
Regular registration is $425, with many discount
options. For example, registration for student grantees or
FLTAs $180 and $300 for other current grantees. As
with all Fulbright Academy programs, the conference is open
to the public, so you can bring friends or colleagues.
Click
here to register.
If you are unable to attend, please consider a
$250 registration sponsorship. You donate a registration and
a young Fulbrighter who otherwise could not come is able to
participate and further their professional development.
For example, a Texan might donate a registration for a
current student grantee in Europe who is originally from
Texas. Click
here for sponsorship details. Current sponsors are
Goldman Sachs and the US National Science
Foundation.
OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS
FOR
FULBRIGHTERS

representatives and members will be attending these as well
as other events listed below. We would like to have
you meet up with other Fulbrighters while in town, so
please
let us know if you are attending or would like to
attend.
If you are attending a professional conference
and would like to meet with Fulbrighters, please send us a
note - we can help you meet up with others.
