The Fulbright Forum - October, 15 2011

Two Weeks Remaining in Our Online Fundraising Auction.

Many thanks to the dozens of Fulbrighters who have been helping and advising us on our first on-line auction. Our Young Alums Affinity Group helped initiate the project, and they will be one of two beneficiaries of the auction proceeds.

The second beneficiary is national Fulbright alumni associations. Several alumni associations have worked with us in the past, and we have collaborated with other institutions as well (some examples are below).  The auction proceeds will allow us to be entrepreneurial in exploring new opportunities for collaboration.

This auction is still open, and Bidding is not limited to Fulbright alumni.  (Click here to enter the auction!)  Please tell friends and associates. You will support the work of Fulbright Academy bidding on the array of items in our online auction, and in return, you can get artwork, business services, vacation packages and other unique items contributed by alumni and Academy partners.

New Items are still being added.
In response to your feedback, we have homestays in Brazil, Alaska, California, and New Hampshire, and it's not too late for you to add your own place (especially if your home/apartment is in a major city and easily accessible by public transit).
You also suggested formal vacations in the US (we have several), more professional development opportunities, jewelry, food & wine, and behind the scenes VIP type tour of historic places.  If you can offer some of these items and services, it appears that the demand is there You can post your items yourself, or send us an email with a descriptions. One person suggested, "I would LOVE ...'a print of Lenin'. "  While I don't have a Lenin print, we might add a souvenir from Gadaffi's Libya - gifts to the Fulbright Academy delegation when we visited last year.
Here are some of the items that are available right now.
Place your bids at any time during the month of October. The Bidding-for-Good Auction service allows you to bid and also secretly enter the maximum that you are willing to pay for the item. When others bid higher than your public bid, then Bidding-for-Good will automatically enter your counterbids up to your maximum.

Why Should You Support or Work with the Fulbright Academy
There are many reasons to support and partner with the Fulbright Academy. You may want access to knowledgeable alumni. You may want partners for business or research. You may want to promote a unique or innovative idea. You may want to help younger Fulbrighters have the same opportunities that you had.
The Fulbright Academy is very much a grass-roots organization. Our programs are led by you and fellow Fulbrighters in the USA and around the world. They incorporate the Fulbright Academy into their activities, their business and their funding proposals because they believe that the unique knowledge and experience of fellow Fulbrighters adds value to their work.
  • Chicago State University added the Fulbright Academy into a funding proposal, and their award from the US Department of Education was $2.4 million
  • The Hungarian Academy of Sciences offered to work with us, and in return, we are bringing to their World Science Forum a 30-member delegation of alumni from 21 countries.
  • With our members, we helped organize panels at meetings of the American Bar Association, the American Chemical Society, the American Psychological Association, and other forums. If you are proposing a panel at a future conference, look to our Affinity Groups and the broader Fulbright alumni community for expert panelists.
  • Other groups and associations have looked to us for affilations. For example, we are a member of the AAAS Science & Human Rights Coalition, and also have affiliations with the Council on Undergraduate Research and the Society for College & University Planning.
  • Our Sustainability Affinity Group is taking the lead for planning our Seventh Annual Conference (March 21-14).  We are seeking alumni presenters from around the world on topics such as Government & Sustainable Development, Natural Resources & Water, Financial Sustainability & Entrepreneurship, Sustaining Culture, Sustaining Health & Public Health, Energy & Infrastructure Sustainability and Sustainability Education. Please use the online form to submit abstracts and ideas.
The lessons:  (1) The Fulbright Academy is entrepreneurial and active.  Our organization is here to work with you and support your efforts, and the connections may yield positive results.  (2) If you are working on a grant proposal to government agency or a public or private foundation, please call the Fulbright Academy so that we can help you identify some Fulbrighters to partner with you.

ABOUT THE FULBRIGHT ACADEMY
The Fulbright Academy receives donations, memberships and sponsorships from individuals and institutions worldwide. The decision maker is typically a Fulbright scholar -- someone whose life was changed by the Fulbright Exchange Program. By supporting us and participating in our programs, these individuals seek to give something back to society. We do not receive financial support from the Fulbright Exchange Program or the US Department of State, so your support is critical to our success.
Join today.  You and your institution should be a member of the Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology. Given our current size, we are not be able to assist every Fulbrighter or every institution, and when we look for outside partners on projects, it's the members that are approached first.  Individual membership is $60/year, and membership for universities and colleges is $500/year.
Last year, 30 individuals or institutions contributed $1,000 or more to the Fulbright Academy.  Some were general contributions, while others were sponsorships or donations of services targeted to a specific initiative.  So far this year, we have 24 donations of $1,000+. If you are in a position to support our work through a donation, membership or sponsorship, simply reply to this email, and we will follow up with you.
The Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology is an independent multi-national, multi-generational and multi-disciplinary network of Fulbrighters, collaborative partners and friends. We create opportunities for collaboration among alumni and their institutions. Our programs are a catalyst for progress in many fields, and we look forward to your involvement.
