Doha, Qatar - March 23-25, 2008
In an effort to address the health concerns of the Middle Eastern region, the Fulbright Academy of Science and Technology is organizing a workshop/dialogue to explore the regional health concerns and specifically those related to nursing work force shortage, regional health issues and environmental sustainability. This three-day interdisciplinary forum in Doha will bring together 60-70 government officials, distinguished researchers and business professionals from the worlds of nursing and public health (especially where it relates to environmental causes). It will include a mixture of Fulbright scholars and other national and international experts. The invited attendees are from the Gulf Region, Europe and North America, with the program scheduled to take place in Doha on March 23-25, 2008 (Sunday to Tuesday).
This meeting will focus on the educational needs of one group of front-line workers for public health: nurses. The Doha program will address research in nursing and public health and the education of people in these professions. Because many health-related problems are linked to environmental causes, we also will be addressing some of these root causes.
In order to quickly advance the discussion, participants will be asked to submit a several page "white paper" that outlines their own viewpoints on the issue and the recent developments. Examples of white papers from our workshop on Digital Libraries for Science, Culture & Education.
Thus, the meeting will:
- Examine best practices for education & training for nurses and nursing educators – the stewards for public and individual health.
- Synthesize evidence-based research in the area of human health and environmental sustainability.
- Foster interdisciplinary research and collaboration in addressing the health of human communities and ecosystems.
- Advance strategies for improving the long-term health stewardship.
The meeting would use workshop techniques to examine what the topics and their impact to different sectors, seeking common characteristics and approaches and looking for cross-sector learning. Involving policy makers will ensure that views on what is needed to build a supportive policy environment are brought into discussions. Involving the corporate sector will help ensure that the recommendations consider fiscal reality and the ability to implement.
International guests will arrive on Saturday, March 22nd and leave on Wednesday, March 26th. The Movenpick in central Doha is the conference hotel. This program format will be similar to a successful FAST program on digital information for science, education and culture, held in January 2007 in Morocco. That three-day invitation-only program for about sixty people was funded by NSF, UNESCO, the Moroccan Government and Thomson Scientific, with cash and in-kind assistance from several US universities. About 40% of the attendees were from the US, 40% from North Africa, and 20% from elsewhere.

Background:
The Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology (FAST) is a global organization established by alumni of the prestigious Fulbright Exchange Program (but we are not affiliated with it). An independent body, we have individual and institutional members in 45 countries, and during the past two years we have hosted programs in Germany, Panama, Morocco and the United States (selected members and partners are listed on this page). FAST works with scientists and researchers in many disciplines – social, natural & life sciences, engineering, and medicine. (Click here for information about the Fulbright Academy.)
The March 2007 FAST Conference in Panama focused on the UN Millennium Development Goals, including panels and posters on topics relating to public health and nursing. One of the keynote speakers was Dr. Tanya Popovic, the chief scientific officer at the US Center for Disease Control in Atlanta (and a Fulbright scholar). We also had a tour of Hospital Punta Pacifica, a new hospital which is affiliated with Johns Hopkins. At the conclusion of the meeting, FAST agreed to host a follow-up program in the Gulf Region relating to nursing, health-care worker education, and health stewardship.
This website only provides an outline of the project. Should you have questions or want more details, please contact Eric Howard via email (ehoward @ FulbrightAcademy.org) or by phone (+1-207-799-3098).
