Fulbright grantees and alumni, international researchers and policymakers and others interested in science and development are invited to the 2008 Fulbright Research Conference in Boston, Massachusetts on February 14-17, 2008. (Thursday - Sunday).

The title for the conference is Energy & Innovation. The program will address new developments in energy-related fields, such as biotechnology & energy production, architecture & design, and transportation.  We also explore innovative new ideas coming from Fulbright scholars and researchers in other fields.

  • Each Session includes four exciting presentations, where speakers share their insights, passions, and ideas - rather than deliver typical speeches or remarks
  • Speakers from divergent fields likely follow one another, providing a forum for leaps of innovation across sectors
  • Q & A and discussion among speakers and audience occurs informally during breaks, meals, and the off-site tours

The program in Boston may include a high-level networking event.  The FAST Summit would serve as a level platform where senior government officials, corporate leaders, and university deans can discuss concepts and good practices and build consensus on energy and innovation.

The conference is multi-disciplinary and will explore energy & innovation from many angles.  For example, the poster session is accepting abstracts for presentations from all disciplines. FAST will also host workshops, programs and tours for scientists interested in topics such as such as nursing & medicine, applied research, and policy implementation.   Click here to Submit Abstract for a Poster Session or Panel

As of October 25, FAST has received abstracts and expressions of interest from scientists and Fulbright scholars from/in Austria, Canada, Ecuador, El Salvador, Germany, Jordan, Macedonia, Morocco, Pakistan, Panama, Romania, South Africa, United Kingdom, and USA.

Some of the proposed panels and programs:

  • Energy & Architecture - historic preservation & new construction
  • Wave Energy - sound waves, water waves, infrared waves, wavy waves
  • Renewable Energy - powering the developed and the developing world
  • Medicine - Fulbright Scholars & innovation
  • Fulbright leaders in the corporate world - energizing change
  • Women in Science

Other programs:

  • Valentine's Day
  • Possible lobster dinner on February 13 for early arrivals
  • President's reception and discussion group
  • Opening of the Fulbright Entrepreneurs Challenge - a business plan competition
  • Origami

At our previous Confernece, registered participants come from the following countries:  Australia, Barbados, Belize, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Columbia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Germany, Greece, Israel,  Jordan, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Singapore, Spain, St. Lucia, United Kingdom, and the United States.  Nearly 20% were repeat attendees - individuals who had also attended our 2006 Conference in Berlin.

Please register now so that you can share your knowledge and experience with our international audience.

2008 Conference Theme:  Energy & Innovation
The four-day program will explore the work of indivudal Fulbright scholars and groups of scholars.  We also will discuss lessons learned and how governments, businesses and others have applied our innovative work.

The Fulbright Research Conferences are multi-disciplinary programs, with participants from social, natural and life sciences, engineering, technology, medicine, law and management. Attendees will have many different professional backgrounds - government, industry, academia, and civil society, and will come from some two dozen or countries.

The main themes will also be addressed during the tours and during the poster session, where you can present your research. Focused discussions will occur at workshops and at theme-oriented roundtable discussions. We also may have a short film festival, with documentaries made by Fulbright scholars.

Panels:
The 4-day conference will start on Thursday and run through the weekend.  Panels will address topics such as ecology, sustainable economic development, education, and medical research.  FAST is seeking respected, high-level individuals to speak on the panels.  If you would like to nominate yourself or another person, please email his/her name and contact information to info@FulbrightAcademy.org.  If you would like to propose an entire panel, please submit a proposal (the topic, the names of likely speakers and potential sources for travel funds - if known) to FAST no later than October 1, 2007.

Speakers

Opening Banquet (Thursday night):  Beyond Earth to Explore Mars
Dan McCleese Chief Scientist, NASA - Jet Propulsion Lab, Pasadena.

Robotic exploration of deep space has become a focus for many nations. The programs of Europe, Russia, and the United States are now joined by expeditions from China, India, and Japan. Their goals, like those of the explorers of the early 19th Century who fought their way to the South Pole, are national prestige and science. Mars is a target of particular importance because it is the most Earthlike planet in the Solar System– to both scientists and the public -- and there is a possibility that life originated there. We will discuss the multinational strategy for exploring Mars and the search for evidence of past life, and examine recent results from the five rovers and orbiters operating there today. We will also introduce Phoenix, currently on its way to Mars for a polar landing on May 25, 2008 (101 days after our opening night - February 14, 2008). Dr. McCleese earned his PhD in astrophysics while on a Fulbright to the UK.

Closing Speaker (Sunday morning):  Inner Space- the Oceans
Keith Ellenbogen, Digital artist, videographer and instructor, Parsons School of Design, NYC

Keith is a digital artist, with a focus on implementing innovative technologies for creative inspiration in artistic and corporate arenas. His underwater videography has been used in campaigns about coral reefs for Earth Echo International and Philippe Cousteau. He has also worked with the New England Aquarium and corporate clients. His 2006 Fulbright was to Malaysia. Still images of his work can be seek at www.bluereef.com.
