Our Flagship Program

Sustainable Cities - Sustainable Communities

The Academy's Seventh Annual Conference

United Arab Emirates - Fall 2012
Hosts: Sharjah Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Zayed University,
Lufthansa, and other institutions.

This spring, a select group of innovative people in the science and technology world will come together for a unique gathering: the start of the Fulbright Academy's seventh annual conference. The Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology is a global organization established by the alumni to create opportunities for collaboration and serve as a catalyst for progress by leveraging the unique knowledge and skills of Fulbrighters worldwide.

As Fulbright scholars, our lives were changed by the Fulbright Exchange Program, and this conference is an opportunity for us to share our experiences and give something back.  Through this program, we seek to improve the state of the world by leveraging our unique knowledge, abilities and connections.  At the conference, we will share with others and learn how Fulbright scholars in business, government, NGO and higher education are working - individually or collaboratively - to prepare for and secure a better future.  At the same time, we will create opportunities for developing relationships among current and future leaders - the types of relationships that Fulbright grants are famous for. While the primary audience is Fulbright scholars and alumni, the program is open to the public and those who have not yet received a grant.

Interested Participants:
Please submit your name and contact details on-line, and we will keep you informed of key developments

Plenary lectures will lead into workshops giving all participants the opportunity to explore the role of social sciences and the application of social sciences to social well-being. The conference will build upon the outcomes of previous FAST programs while also promoting some of the most current developments.  During the past five years, FAST conferences and workshops have been held in Ecuador, Germany, Macedonia, Morocco, Qatar, Singapore and the USA.

Sustainable Cities and Communities are influenced by developments in fields such as:

Prior Conferences

For sixty years, Fulbright scholars have been advising businesses, governments, and other organizations on a broad range of science and technology issues.  Since its creation in 1946, the goal of the exchange program has been to honor top scientists and promising young professionals by providing opportunties to conduct research and share their knowledge, while also serving a broader public interest - increasing mutual understanding among nations. A grass-roots organization established by alumni of that exchange program, the Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology (FAST) continues that dual mission.

Here are some the leading Fulbright alumni who have attended FAST conferences and programs. Due to space limitations, this list could not include the many leaders in the academic community - deans, associate deans, provosts, presidents, and distinguished professors.

  • Dr. Gordon Bell, Principal Researcher, Microsoft
  • Dr. Yehuda Danon, Former Surgeon General of the State of Israel
  • Ambassador Manuel Gutierrez-Ruiz, Former Ambassador of El Salvador to the United Kingdom
  • Dr. David Lightfoot, Head of the Directorate for Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences, US National Science Foundation
  • Ms. Ana Maria Majano, Former Minister of Environment in El Salvador
  • Dr. Dan McCleese, Chief Scientist at the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab
  • Dr. Norman Neureiter, Director of the AAAS Center for Science, Technology & Security Policy
  • Dr. Tanja Popovic, Chief Scientist at the US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention
  • Mr. Philip Yeo, Chairman of Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology & Research

We also invite non-Fulbrighters to some of our programs. Most have worked with or hosted visiting scholars, and so they share an interest in the FAST network and FAST programs.

  • Sir Harold Kroto, co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996
  • Dr. Saif Al Hajari, Vice Chair of the Qatar Foundation, Qatar
  • Dr. Rita Colwell, Former Director of the US National Science Foundation (NSF)
  • Dr. Nina Fedoroff, Science & Technology Advisor to the US Secretary of State
  • Ambassador Federico Humbert, Ambassador of Panama to the United States
  • Mr. Lim Chuan Poh, Former Minister of Education, Singapore
  • Dr. Julia Royal, Director of International Programs, US National Library of Medicine
  • Ms. Latifa Tricha, Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research, Morocco

Important Note for Speakers / Presenters

Conference Product:
The Global Sustainable Communities Design Handbook.

A draft of the book's table of contents

One goal of the Fulbright Academy is the sharing of knowledge among alumni.  Meeting this goal has an impact on our speakers and presenters in three important ways.

  1.  Speakers and panelists are primarily Fulbright alumni, though there may be non-alumni at the conference.
  2. The schedule is designed to have opportunities for discussion and interaction, as we feel that the participants should participate - it's not speakers and an audience.
  3. All of the participants - speakers included - are expected to register at the regular rates.  At some conferences, the speakers get a free or discounted registration.  At FAST, we want to multi-national and multi-generational interaction, so we have a different system - by having everyone contribute something, we are able to offer steep discounts to younger alumni and to  alumni from low and middle-income countries.
