How to Contribute

The Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology is a membership-based organization established by alumni of the Fulbright Exchange Program.  Our general mission is to improve the state of the world by leveraging the unique knowledge, abilities and connections of the Fulbright Alumni Community --- Creating collaboration, Catalyzing progress.

Member benefits include invitations to events, online networking,  reduced rates for our meetings and opportunities to collaborate with other grantees on special programs and projects.

We accept donations at all levels, as well as donations of goods and services.

Annual membership is $60 for individuals, $500 for academic institutions, and $1,000 for corporations and government agencies.  Membership for students and post-docs is $40 for two years.  Click here for the generic membership form.  (we have separate forms for different categories of membership - see the box on the right for details).  Contributions from US citizens are tax-deductible.

The Fulbright program has changed many lives; about 20% of our members contribute $100 or more.  If you are joining as an individual, please consider giving at a higher level. The Director's Circle is for those who have donated at least $1,000.  Special rates are available for those living in low and middle-income countries and for non-profit organizations.

A significant portion of the Academy's income comes from grants and from contributions given by individual donors.  If you would like to make a larger contribution, please contact our Executive Director, Mr. Eric Howard, at 1-207-799-3098.

SOME DETAILS ABOUT MEMBERSHIP

  • We produced a short video about the Academy, our goals and mission.  Filmed in Panama at our 2007 Annual Conference, it features several well-known scientists and Fulbright scholars.  Click here for the video.
  • Membership in the Academy is open to any individual, business, government agency, academic institution, and other like institutions. Click here for a list of members and supporters.

  • In addition to members, we also have supporters who are interested in the work of the Academy but are not yet contributing (paying) members.  If you would like to be kept informed about our work, just sign up for our free newsletter.

Annual Campaign Goal: $40,000 in Unrestricted Funds

Our Annual Campaign includes membership contributions and unrestricted donations from individuals. Individual contributions came from around the United States and other countries. Donors in 2008, for example, were in Austria, Australia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Israel, Mexico, Panama, Qatar, Romania, Spain, Singapore, UAE and United Kingdom. Our individual donors include  are current grantees or alumni; others are family of Fulbrighters or Friends of FAST.

Institutional and corporate members are entities that support the Academy's global mission and/or seek access to our expertise, such as our specialized advisory service on international research or the customized science research tours.  We also partner with institutions on conferences, meetings and symposiums.

What Does Your Money Go Toward?

Your donations to our Annual Campaign support our mission to serve others by supporting programs, research initiatives, and numerous other activities that enrich the Fulbright Alumni Community. For example, your memberships and donations made it possible for us to offer reduced-rate or free registrations for lower-income Fulbrighters to our science & technology conferences and workshops in the US and around the world. Your contributions also underwrite the Fulbright Forums and networking programs.

We received over $25,000 from individual donors in 2008, representing just under $10% of our $306,000 income in that year. In 2009, because of the down economy, FAST only raised only $16,400 (as well as over $100,000 in in-kind donations).  2010 was much better.  Thank you all for your generous contributions.

Why Should You Contribute?

If your career or personal life was changed in a positive way by the Fulbright Exchange Program, you should certainly consider a donation to the Fulbright Academy. You also should give if you support our mission and the programs that we carry out.

How Can You Give?

Unrestricted Contributions: These gifts enable us to direct financial support where it is most needed. Unrestricted funds contribute to Special Programs such as the Annual Conference, Fulbright Forums, Outreach Programs, and Organizational Development.

Restricted Contributions: Donors direct their gifts to funds or purposes that hold personal meaning for them. Please contact the Development Office at 207-799-3098 for examples of unrestricted donations.  Or review the activities of our Affinity Groups and support one of them.

In-kind Contributions: Some alumni and Friends of the Academy support our work through donations of products or services, from computer hardware/software to graphic design assistance.

Matching Contributions: Let us know if the company you work for matches employees' charitable gifts. Many US corporations will match your donation dollar-for-dollar.

Bequests: You can ensure a permanent legacy by making the Fulbright Academy a beneficiary of your estate. Please contact our Executive Director at 207-799-3098 for more information.
